PITTSBURG -- Senior guard
Harper Schreiner hit two free throws with 18.0 seconds to play to help the No. 8 ranked Pittsburg State University women's basketball team seal a 62-59 win over the University of Central Oklahoma Thursday (Dec. 4) in the MIAA opener for both schools.
The Gorillas (5-1, 1-0 MIAA) led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Pitt State had to hold off the pesky Bronchos (1-5, 0-1 MIAA) down the stretch in the fourth quarter. UCO's Jerney Bennett missed a guarded shot in the game's waning seconds and Schreiner rebounded the miss just ahead of the final horn.
Freshman center
Kaycee McCumber posted her second double-double on the young season with 15 points and 15 rebounds in the contest. Freshman guard
Marin Adams also scored in double figures with 10 points. Schreiner finished with nine points, six rebounds and four assists, while junior guard Ja-Miya added eight points and four assists.
The Gorillas shot just 31.5 percent from the field (17-54) on the night, but Pitt State limited the Bronchos to 29.5 percent shooting (18-61). The game was mired by 49 personal fouls. Pitt State made 28 of 35 free throws, while UCO posted a 22 of 34 shooting line from the charity stripe.
UCO's Nykaiya Dillard led all scorers with 20 points. Three other Bronchos - Bennett (11), Kaitlyn McCarn (11) and Peyton Walker (10) -- posted double-digit scoring totals.
The Gorillas will return to action Saturday by hosting MIAA rival Rogers State University Saturday (Dec. 6) at 1:30 p.m. (CST) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
