Hornets Strike Early in 11-7 Win Over Gorillas

PITTSBURG -- The Emporia State University baseball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and rode that early momentum to an 11-7 victory over Pittsburg State University Monday (Feb. 24).

The Hornets (5-5, 1-2 MIAA) claimed the final game in the three-game series against the Gorillas (9-1, 2-1 MIAA), who saw their program-best nine-game winning streak to start the season come to an end.

ESU plated three runs in the top of the first inning, added a run in the second and broke the game open on Logan Myers' grand slam in the top of the third inning. Pitt State countered with five runs in the bottom of the third, but the Hornets added three pivotal runs in the sixth frame to take control.

Dagen Brewer, Hayden Dyer and Austin Warkins all homered in the game for Pitt State. Rickey Sanchez collected three hits in the contest to lead the Gorillas nine-hit attack.

Tanner Leslie (1-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed four runs and seven hits in 2.0 innings of work.

The Gorillas will travel to Kansas City, Mo., to face Rockhurst University in a non-conference game Wednesday (Feb. 26).
