Gorillas Head to Kansas City to Face Rockhurst Wednesday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will travel to Kansas City, Mo., Wednesday (Feb. 26) for a 4 p.m. (CST) contest against Rockhurst University at Loyola Park Baseball Field.

The Gorillas added the non-conference match-up to their schedule after Pitt State's three-game series against Maryville University (Feb. 14-16) was scrapped due to the weather earlier this month.


Pitt State is 9-1 on the young season. The Gorillas opened MIAA play by taking two of three games from Emporia State University Sunday and Monday (Feb. 23-24). Pitt State set a program record by winning its first nine games of the season before the Hornets claimed an 11-7 win over the Gorillas Monday.

Rockhurst is 2-0 heading into a Tuesday afternoon home match-up against Truman State University. The Hawks swept a doubleheader from the Bulldogs Monday, posting 3-2 and 5-2 wins.
 
As a team, the Gorillas are batting .321 and scoring 9.3 runs per game to date. Pitt State pitchers are carrying a 2.57 ERA with 114 strikeouts in 84 inning of work. The Gorillas have made just five errors in 335 total chances (.985 fielding pct.).

Senior outfielder Josh Holmes (Lenexa, Kan.) leads the squad with a .458 batting average in nine games played. He has five doubles, two home runs and nine runs scored to date.

Senior infielder Austin Warkins (Haysville, Kan.) went 4-for-10 with a double, three home runs and six RBI in the three-game series against ESU, after opening the young season in an 0-for-11 slump.

Junior infielder Dagen Brewer is hitting .412 with 14 hits in 34 at-bats so far. He has a team-leading nine doubles and three home runs among his 14 hits and he's driven in 17 runs to date. Brewer (Topeka) leads the MIAA in doubles and ranks second in the conference in RBI (18) as of Monday's games.

The Gorillas have outscored their opponents, 93-25, after 10 games played.
