No. 10 Gorillas Clinch Share of MIAA Regular Season Title

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team clinched a share of the 2024-25 MIAA regular season championship Wednesday (Feb. 26) with an 85-62 victory over Washburn University.

The Gorillas, the No. 10 ranked team in NCAA Division II, will head to the regular season finale Saturday with a 25-3 overall record and 17-1 mark in MIAA play. Pitt State leads second-place Fort Hays State University (25-2, 16-2 MIAA) by one game in the league standings. The Gorillas can claim the crown outright with a victory over the University of Central Missouri Saturday.

Karenna Gerber and Grace Pyle scored 24 points apiece to spark Pitt State in the lopsided win Thursday. Hannah Nilges (11) and Maycee James (10) also scored in double figures. The Gorillas shot 46.5 percent from the field in the game (33-71) and made eight more baskets than the Ichabods (16-12, 10-8 MIAA).

Yiibari Nwidadah led four WU players in double figures with 14 points.

Thursday's win ensures Pitt State of its fourth all-time MIAA regular season championship, the first conference regular season crown since 2016-17. The Gorillas also won regular season titles in 1991-92 and 1995-96. Pitt State claimed the 2023-24 MIAA Postseason Tournament title as well.
