Gorillas Sweep First Day of Top Gun Invite

SHAWNEE, Kan. - The Pittsburg State University softball team picked up two victories on Friday (Feb. 28) at the Top Gun Invite, besting Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst at the Mid American Sports Complex.

For the Gorillas (11-3) in game one, Courtney Storey led the team with two runs driven in from two hits while Heather Arnett went 4-for-4 with three runs scored from the lead off spot. Chelsea Beville and Jadyn Standeford (2-0) combined to strikeout five Bearcats (6-8) in the 6-4 win.

In game two, Pittsburg State was led by Kadyn Trochim going 2-for-2 with four RBI and her second home run of the season. Trochim was joined by Arnett, Alleyna Rushing and Emily Ades for the team lead in runs scored with two each. Ava Laurent (6-2) struck out nine Hawks (2-6) in five innings, Lexi Franklin closed out the game with two shutout innings and a pair of strikeouts to preserve the 8-4 victory.

Up next for the Gorillas in the final day of the Top Gun Invite will be the Minnesota State - Mankato Mavericks at 1:30 p.m. (CST) from Field 4, and the Augustana Univeristy Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Field 1 at the Mid American Sports Complex. 

Notes: Heather Arnett moved past Gregan Ketcham (2003-06) for 10th in PSU career ranks for runs scored with 129. Arnett also moved into 15th in MIAA standings for stolen bases in a career with 88, passing Torrie Beauchamp (1996-99) from Washburn. Ava Laurent is now 11th in program history for career strikeouts with 251, passing JoAnna Brozovich (2004-07).
