Jake Skaggs delivered the go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and Pittsburg State University starter
Maddox Thornton stymied the Fort Hays State University offense for a 5-1 victory Saturday (Mar. 22) at Al Ortolani Field.
The win helped the Gorillas (18-6, 8-6 MIAA) bounce back from a 9-8 10-inning loss to the No. 27 Tigers (18-6, 13-2 MIAA) Friday. Pitt State and FHSU will wrap up the three-game MIAA series iwth a Noon (CDT) contest Sunday.
Thornton (5-1) scattered seven hits over 8.0 effective innings of work. He hit a batter and issued one walk while registering four strikeouts. Thornton exited the game after 118 pitches and reliever
Cooper Crouch got the final three outs to close out the win.
Skaggs and
Connor Allen had two hits apiece for the Gorillas. Allen and
Austin Warkins also had RBIs in the contest.
