Frison, Gorillas Roll Past Lopers into Semifinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sophomore guard Jordan Frison scored a career best 39 points to help fuel the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team to a 96-63 victory over the University of Nebraska-Kearney in the quarterfinals of the 2025 MIAA Postseason Tournament Friday (Mar. 7).

The Gorillas (18-11) advance to Saturday's semifinals where fifth-seeded Pittsburg State will meet the tournament's No. 8 seed Central Oklahoma at Noon (CST) at historic Municipal Auditorium. UNK's season ends with a 12-16 overall record.

Frison made 15 of 24 shots from the floor en route to posting the second-highest scoring total in Pitt State's NCAA era (1990-present) and the eighth-best scoring output in program history.

Mark Eddington scored 40 points in a road win over Northwest Missouri on Feb. 17, 1996, while Jim Chroust recorded a program best 48 points in a victory over the College of Emporia on Mar. 2, 1966. Frison's 39-point outburst matches the 39 points Eddie Jackson scored against Truman State on Feb. 28, 2004.

The Gorillas shot a blistering 55.9 percent from the field in the game, connecting on 33 of 59 attempts. Johannes Kirsipuu added 16 points in 28 minutes of action for the Gorillas. He made four of seven shots, including three 3-pointers. As a team, Pitt State converted 10 long-range shots in the contest. The Gorillas led 46-30 at the break.

R.J. Forney Jr. and Avery Taggart added nine points apiece with Taggart adding a team-leading seven rebounds. Tane Prictor chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.

The Lopers, who shot just 33.9 percent (20-59) from the field in the game, got 17 points from Ja'Bryant Hill and 15 more from Allen Taylor.

UCO advanced to Saturday's semifinal match-up with a 90-84 upset win over top-seeded Washburn Thursday. The Gorillas and Bronchos split a pair of head-to-head regular season battles with each squad winning on the road. Pitt State downed UCO, 79-76, at Edmond on Dec. 4, before the Bronchos returned the favor with an 84-78 win in Pittsburg on Jan. 18.
