Gorillas to Battle Miners in Midweek Road Game

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team travel to Rolla, Mo., for a non-conference match-up against Missouri University of Science & Technology Tuesday (Apr. 15). First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (CDT) at the Ballpark at S&T.

Pitt State brings a 30-7 overall record into Tuesday's action. The Gorillas tied a program record by recording their 12th consecutive victory in a 15-1 decision against Rogers State University Sunday (Apr. 13).

Missouri S&T is 21-15 on the season after splitting a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series against Drury University over the weekend.

The Gorillas and Miners previously met in Pittsburg on Mar. 5 with Pitt State claiming an 8-7 win at Al Ortolani Field.

As a team, the Gorillas are batting .321 and scoring 9.1 runs per game to date. Pitt State pitchers are carrying a 3.97 ERA with 323 strikeouts in 317.2 innings of work. The Gorillas have made just 24 errors in 1,314 total chances (.982 fielding pct.). Offensively, Pitt State leads the MIAA in batting average, runs scored, triples (23), on-base percentage (.430) and slugging percentage (.541). The Gorillas rank second in NCAA Division II in triples. Pitt State also is second in the conference in doubles (93) and RBI (307), fifth in the league in stolen bases (62) and sixth in the conference in home runs (45).

The Pitt State pitching staff leads the MIAA and ranks 17th in Division II in ERA. The Gorillas also rank second in the conference in strikeouts (9.16 K/9 IP) and opponent batting average (.246). Defensively, the Gorillas rank No. 2 nationally in fielding percentage.

Junior infielder Drew Bugner is batting a team-leading .437 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 32 RBI in 26 games played. Bugner (Wichita, Kan.) leads the MIAA in batting average and enters Tuesday's action on a 16-game hitting streak.

Graduate outfielder Alex Rodgers (.404/.546/.603) has scored a team-leading 62 runs, smacked six triples and stolen 27 bases. He leads the MIAA in runs and stolen bases and ranks third in NCAA Division II in runs scored and tied for fifth place nationally in triples.


Senior infielder Rickey Sanchez is hitting .375 with 38 runs scored, 14 doubles, three home runs and 31 RBI. Sanchez (Mexico City) ranks eighth in the conference in batting average and tied for fourth place in the conference in doubles.

Junior infielder/designated hitter Dagen Brewer has a .342/.412/.786 slash line in 30 games played. The Topeka native has 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 52 RBI to his credit. He tied the school single game record with nine RBI in the win vs. SBU on Mar. 18. Brewer currently ranks second in the MIAA in slugging, third in the conference in RBI and fourth in the league in home runs.

Senior RHP Brady Pacha, the Gorillas anticipated midweek starter, is 5-1 with a 2.93 ERA and one save in 11 appearances, three starts. He has allowed just 16 hits in 30.2 innings pitched. Pacha (Wichita) has 28 strikeouts to his credit. He tossed 7.0 shutout innings in the Gorillas' 5-0 win vs. Drury on Apr. 1.

Senior RHP Cadyn Castellanos (1-2, 4.00 ERA) and junior RHP Cooper Crouch (2-1, 4 Sv, 2.45 ERA) have been effective out of the Pitt State bullpen. Castellanos (Murrieta, Calif.) has 26 Ks in 27.0 innings pitched. He's allowed 27 hits and just four walks in 15 appearances, while Crouch (Webb City, Mo.) has surrendered four runs with 13 strikeouts in 14.2 innings of work in 13 appearances.
