PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University swept a doubleheader from Newman University Sunday (Apr. 6) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas defeated the Jets 6-4 and 15-4 in the twinbill.
Starter
Kolby Dougan improved to 7-0 on the season in game one. Dougan limited Newman to one run on two hits through 6.0 innings pitched. He issued two walks and registered 12 strikeouts, logging his seventh double-digit strikeout outing of the season.
Hayden Dyer tripled, homered and drove in a pair of runs in the contest, while
Rickey Sanchez also had two hits and two RBI.
In the nightcap, the Gorillas overcame a 4-1 deficit by scoring six runs in the fifth inning and four runs apiece in the sixth and seventh frames to pull away for a run-rule victory. Starter
Maddox Thornton (7-1) allowed four run in 6.0 innings of work, fanning four batters.
Austin Warkins smacked a three-run home run and drove in four runs in the contest. Dyer also tripled and knocked in four runs, while
Alex Rodgers went 3-foro-4 at the plate with a triple, three runs scored and three RBI.
Pitt State improved to 25-7 on the season with a 14-7 mark in MIAA play. The Gorillas and Newman (8-25, 4-19 MIAA) will wrap up their three-game series with a 1 p.m. game Monday.
