PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State women's basketball team will host a pair of historic former squads – the 1995-96 Gorillas and the 2015-16 Gorillas – for their 30-year and 10-year reunions and present Final Four rings to the 2024-25 Gorillas at Saturday's MIAA doubleheader against Missouri Southern State University.
Pitt State will recognize the 10-year anniversary of the 2015-16 squad at halftime of the women's 1:30 p.m. match-up against the Lady Lions at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court. The 2015-16 Gorillas posted a school record 29 victories en route to capturing the NCAA Division II South Central Regional crown and advancing to the NCAA-II Elite Eight for the second time in five seasons under former head coach Lane Lord.
In between games, the school will honor the 30
th anniversary of the 1995-96 MIAA Co-Champion squad. The 1995-96 Gorillas enjoyed an 18-8 record, including a 12-4 mark in MIAA play. Pitt State secured the program's second all-time MIAA crown under former head coach Steve High, sharing the league regular season title with the University of Central Missouri and Missouri University of Science & Technology.
At halftime of Saturday's men's game between the Gorillas and Lions, Pitt State will conduct a ring ceremony for the 2024-25 Gorillas. Last year's squad established a new school record with 33 wins, posting a 33-4 overall record. The Gorillas captured both MIAA regular season and postseason tournament crowns; swept the competition in the NCAA Division II Central Regional; and advanced to the NCAA-II Elite Eight at Pittsburgh, Pa. Pitt State knocked off Lubbock Christian University (66-55) in the national quarterfinals before dropping a hard fought 68-61 decision to eventual national champion Grand Valley State University in the national semifinals.
The 2025-26 Gorillas enter Saturday's action 14-3 overall and 7-1 in MIAA play. Pitt State, the No. 13 ranked team in the most recent WBCA/NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, shares the top spot in the MIAA standings with No. 5 Fort Hays State University (16-1, 7-1 MIAA) and MSSU (13-4, 7-1 MIAA).
