MAGNOLIA, Ark. -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team posted a pair of convincing opening day victories over Southern Arkansas University as the Gorillas defeated the Muleriders, 11-2 and 14-1, Sunday (Feb. 1). The two teams will close out the three-game series with a 1 p.m. (CST) contest Monday (Feb. 2) at Walker Stadium on the SAU campus.
In game one action, Pitt State broke open a 1-1 game with three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth frame. The Gorillas used a 13-hit attack in the contest and tacked on a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Newcomer
Grant Nottlemann paced the Gorillas offensive attack, going 3-for-5 with a triple and five runs driven in. Leadoff hitter
Jadyn McNealy also collected three hits, including a double, and scored twice. Preseason All-American
Dagen Brewer continued his hot hitting from the 2025 campaign, going 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while newcomer
Isaac Webb went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
UCO transfer
Preston Giltner limited SAU to one run on three hits over 3.0 innings of work to open the game.
Bradyn McClure (1-0) earned the win by tossing 4.0 innings of one-hit relief. He issued two walks and registered five strikeouts. Redshirt freshman
Bradley Neill also tossed two clean innings with two strikeouts on the back end.
In game two, the Gorillas broke open a 2-1 game with an 11-run fifth inning. Newcomer
Eric Bacon went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs scored, while Brewer doubled and drove in three runs. Brewer tied the Pitt State record for consecutive hits (22) in the contest. Newcomer
Landon Bruce also had three hits and a pair of RBI, while Webb added two hits and three RBI.
Starter
Zach Voss (1-0) limited SAU to one run on two hits over 4.0 innings of work.
Ty Blecha (2.0 IP) and
Porter Starnes (1.0 IP) combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief.
The Gorillas ushered in the
Brock Buckingham era with a pair of victories on day one for the first-year skipper. Buckingham became the sixth head coach in Pitt State history on May 27, 2025. He came to Pitt State from Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kan., where he had served as an assistant coach for 17 seasons (2005-06, 2011-25).
