No. 25 Gorillas Fall In OT Battle Against No. 6 Tigers

PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team fell in overtime, 74-71 on Senior Day Saturday (Feb. 21) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.

Pittsburg State (18-8, 11-6 MIAA) got 21 points from Ja'Miya Brown, 17 points from Clara Swearingen and a 16-point 22-rebound double-double from Kaycee McCumber. McCumer tied the school record for rebounds in a game and collected her eighth double-double of the season.

Fort Hays State (24-3, 15-3 MIAA) was led by Talexa Weeter with 34 points and 15 rebounds, Ellie Stearns finished with 14 points and Brooke Loewe collected a 12-point, 12-rebound, 10-rebound triple-double. 

At the half, Pittsburg State led 36-25 after the Tigers were limited to six second quarter points. Heading into the final period of regulation, the Gorillas held onto a 52-41 lead after both team scored 16 points in the third quarter. The fourth quarter would see FHSU go on a 17-5 run over the final 5:23 of play in regulation to send the game into overtime. Weeter with 0.5 seconds remaining converted on a layup to make it 65-65.

In overtime, Fort Hays State broke the 65-65 deadlock with 3:54 remaining and didn't look back on their way to the 74-71 final score.

Up next for the Gorillas will be the final road trip of the regular season, beginning with the Washburn University Ichabods on Wednesday (Feb. 25). Tip off from Lee Arena is set for 5:30 p.m. (CST).
