Gorillas Ride Long Balls to 20-2 Win Over Newman

PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team slugged seven home runs, including four in an 11-run sixth inning outburst, to power the Gorillas to a 20-2 victory over Newman University Tuesday (Feb. 24) at Al Ortolani Field.

Dagen Brewer led Pitt State's 18-hit offensive attack with a 4-for-4 day at the plate. Brewer, who extended his MIAA record consecutive games hitting streak to 34 games in the contest, doubled in a run in the bottom of the first, smacked a solo home run in the third frame and added an RBI single in the fourth. He finished the game a triple short of hitting for the cycle.

While Brewer just missed the cycle, the Gorillas delivered a home run cycle in a sixth inning that turned a 9-1 edge into a 20-1 affair. Cole Carter belted a solo home run to start the Pitt State scoring in the inning. Brady Patterson followed with a two-run shot before Brett Sarwinski unloaded the bases with a grandslam. Andrew Branson, who drove in four runs in the game, closed out the inning with a three-run blast.

Jaron Cotton and Eric Bacon also hit fifth inning home runs, with Cotton providing a two-run round-tripper and Bacon hitting a solo shot.

Five Pitt State pitchers combined to limit the Jets (3-11, 1-3 MIAA) to a pair of runs on four hits in the contest. Starter Jackson Murry (1-0) earned the win by predetermination. He needed just 17 pitches to record six outs, three by strikeout. Relievers Ryker Curry, Ricardo Hernandez, Ryan Leiker and Jaxson Cahoy combined to hold Newman to three hits and two runs over the final five innings of play.

Pitt State tied a program record for consecutive wins in improving to 14-0 on the season (4-0 MIAA). The Gorillas, ranked No. 4 nationally by the baseball writers (NCBWA) and No. 7 by the D2 baseball coaches (ABCA), will travel to Fort Smith, Ark., for a three-game weekend series against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith beginning Friday (Feb. 27).
