PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team kept its unbeaten streak intact with a 17-2 series opening victory over the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Friday (Feb. 27).
The Gorillas improved to 15-0 on the season and 5-0 in MIAA play. Pitt State, off to the best start to a season in school history, set a program record with its 15th consecutive win. The 2025 Gorillas previously set the school mark for consecutive wins with 14 between Mar. x and Apr. x last year.
Dagen Brewer continued his torrid hitting pace for the Gorillas. Brewer doubled twice and belted a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in Pitt State's seven-run ninth inning that punctuated the lopsided win. Brewer, who extended his MIAA record consecutive games hitting streak to 35 games, finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored and six RBI.
Eric Bacon and
Grant Nottlemann also hit home runs for the Gorillas.
Isaac Webb collected two hits and scored twice, while Jayden McNealy and Bacon scored three runs apiece.
Preston Giltner improved to 3-0 on the season by limited UAFS (1-12, 0-4 MIAA) two a pair of first inning runs. Giltner tossed 5.0 innings and fanned six batters.
Bradyn McClure scattered four hits over 3.0 innings of relief work, while registering five strikeouts. Cooper Crough tossed a scoreless ninth inning to complete the pitching battery.
The Gorillas and Lions will resume the series with a 1 p.m. (CST) game Saturday at Crowder Field.
