WICHITA, Kan. - The Pittsburg State University men's basketball team got out to a quick start and flew past the Newman University Jets, 95-57 to end the weekend at Fugate Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 7).
For the Gorillas (13-9, 7-5 MIAA),
Mason English posted a 23-point, 10-assist double-double to lead the team in scoring and assists provided.
Donald Coats (18),
Hayden Shanks (17) and
Connor Rogers (12) were the other members of the team to score in double figures. As a team, Pittsbug State shot .548 from the field, .444 from distance and .789 from the charity stripe while holding a 24-2 advantage on points off turnovers over Newman (5-18, 1-13 MIAA).
Pittsburg State started the game off on a 24-2 run that culminated with a fast break layup from
Alijah Curry with 13:10 remaining. The Gorillas pushed the lead in the first half up to 34 (51-17) with 1:38 left, following a jumper from
Ethan Sage. Pitt State got the lead up to 40 twice in the second half as they cruised to the 95-57 final scoreline.
Up next for the Gorillas will be the Missouri Western State University Griffons on Wednesday (Feb. 11). Tip off from John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court is set for 7:30 p.m. (CST).
