No. 2/4 Gorillas Close Road Swing Wednesday

PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team will travel to Wichita, Kan., Wednesday (Mar. 11) to face Newman University in an MIAA midweek match-up. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (CDT) at McCarthy Field.

Pittsburg State is 19-1 overall and 9-1 in MIAA play. The Gorillas are ranked No. 2 in the most recent National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) NCAA Division II Top 25 poll released on Mar. 4 and No. 4 in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top 30 poll released today.
 
Pitt State took two of three games in an MIAA road series against No. 15 Emporia State University last weekend. The Gorillas bounced back from a series opening loss to the Hornets Friday to post 6-2 and 11-7 wins the next two days. Wednesday's contest will be the last in a seven-game road swing for Pitt State.
 
Newman is 4-16 overall (2-8 MIAA) coming into Wednesday's action. The Jets snapped a six-game losing streak with a 12-4 win over Northeastern State University Monday (Mar. 9).
 
Pitt State and Newman met previously in Pittsburg on Feb. 24 with the Gorillas claiming a 20-2 run-rule victory over the Jets.
 
The Gorillas currently lead Division II in on-base percentage (.491), rank second nationally in batting average (.379) and third nationally in scoring (13.0 rpg). Pitt State's pitchers also carry the sixth-best ERA (3.32) in the nation and the Gorillas rank fourth nationally in WHIP (1.16). Defensively, the Gorillas rank fifth in D2 in fielding percentage (.982). Pitt State leads the MIAA in batting average, runs (260), hits (264), home runs (26), slugging percentage (.585), on-base percentage (.491) and earned run average (3.32).
 
Senior outfielder Dagen Brewer leads the MIAA and ranks sixth nationally with a .529 batting average. He has collected 37 hits, with 11 doubles and eight home runs, scored 34 runs and compiled 43 RBI. Brewer leads D2 in RBI (2.15 pg), ranks second nationally in on-base percentage (.628), third nationally in slugging (1.057) and fifth in D2 in runs. The Topeka native was named the Division II Hitter of the Week last week. Brewer saw his MIAA record consecutive game hitting streak end at 37 games in last Friday's match-up against ESU.
 
Junior outfielder Eric Bacon is hitting .463 with 38 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs and 31 RBI. He leads the MIAA and ranks second in D2 in runs scored. Bacon also leads the MIAA in hits (38) and ranks second in the conference in batting average.
 
Junior infielder Jadyn McNealy (.394, 34 runs, 22 SB) ranks third in D2 in stolen bases and fifth nationally in runs scored. Senior outfielder Isaac Webb is slashing .380/.467/.709 on the season. He has eight doubles, three triples, four home runs and 34 RBI to date. Junior infielder Landin Midgett also is batting .385 with seven doubles, three HRs and 35 RBI. Midgett ranks eighth nationally in RBI.
