EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team dropped its first game of the season in a 14-2 decision against Emporia State University Friday (Mar. 6) at Glennen Field.
The Gorillas (17-1, 7-1 MIAA) opened the season with a school record 17 consecutive victories, rising to No. 2 in the NCBWA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll (No. 3 in the ABCA D2 Top 30 poll). The No. 15 ranked Hornets improved to 14-3 overall (5-2 MIAA) with the win.
ESU's Seth Stover limited Pitt State to two runs and five hits over 6.0 innings of work. He issued two walks and registered five strikeouts.
The Gorillas got an RBI grounder from
Dagen Brewer for an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Eric Bacon also had a run scoring single in the third inning. Jadyn McNealey went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored both of Pitt State's runs. Brewer saw his MIAA record 37-game hitting streak end in the contest. He went 0-for-2 with a walk in three plate appearances.
Logan Myers doubled twice and homered during a four-hit day to spark the Hornets offense.
The two squads will resume the three-game MIAA series with a 2 p.m. (CST) contest Saturday (Mar. 7).
