Gorillas Handle Jets in Midweek Match-up

PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team overcame an early 4-0 deficit and rolled to a 21-4 victory over Newman University Wednesday (Mar. 11) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas, who climbed to the No. 1 ranking in the NCBWA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll earlier Wednesday, improved to 20-1 on the season and 9-01 in MIAA play. The Jets, who drove to Pittsburg Wednesday after overnight rain showers prevented Newman from hosting in Wichita today, slipped to 4-17 (2-9 MIAA).

Jadyn McNealy paced Pitt State's 16-hit offensive attack with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He scored twice, drove in three runs and swiped three bases. Dagen Brewer, Andrew Branson, Jaron Cotton, Brett Sarwinski and Koby Allison each had two hits in the contest. Cotton, Cole Carter and Kam Coester joined McNealy with three-RBI days.

Cross Dowd (1-0), the second of seven Pitt State pitchers to see action in the game, earned his first win of the season. Dowd tossed 2.0 no-hit innings.

The Gorillas will open a three-game MIAA series against No. 7/6 University of Central Missouri starting Friday (Mar. 13) at 3 p.m. (CDT).
