No. 9/7 Gorillas Complete Series Sweep of No. 6/5 Hillcats

PITTSBURG -- Eric Bacon delivered a walk off double to score Andrew Branson with the game-winning run in a 10-9 victory over Rogers State University Sunday (Apr. 26) at Al Ortolani Field.

Bacon's hit helped the Gorillas, ranked No. 9 by the baseball writers and No. 7 in the national coaches poll, complete a three-game series sweep of the No. 6/5 Hillcats. Pitt State improved to 37-8 overall and 24-8 in MIAA play, pulling within a half-game of Rogers State (37-10, 25-8 MIAA) at the top of the conference standings.

The Gorillas fell behind 7-1 in the top of the third inning, but Pitt State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 9-7 lead. The Hillcats got a run in the seventh and RSU knotted up the score on a solo home run by Nathan Gutierrez in the top of the ninth. The Hillcats loaded the bases following the game-tying blast, but Pitt State reliever Ryan Leiker (1-0) struck out Blake Conrad to end the threat.

Branson drew a lead off walk from RSU reliever Michael Klein (2-1) in the bottom of the ninth. Landon Bruce moved Branson into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt to set up Bacon's two-out heroics.

Dagen Brewer had a two-run single in the fifth inning that staked the Gorillas to an 8-7 lead. Isaac Webb, Grant Nottlemann and Cooper Wesslund also had two RBI each in the game. Bacon scored three times, while Jadyn McNealy and Branson added two runs apiece.

Pitt State will travel to Wichita for an MIAA match-up against Newman University Tuesday (Apr. 28). The Gorillas can pull even with the Hillcats at the top of the MIAA standings with a win over the Jets.
