WICHITA -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team posted an 18-0 victory over Newman University Tuesday (Apr. 28) at West Side Athletic Field.
Pitt State posted its 10th consecutive victory to climb into a tie atop the MIAA standings with Rogers State University heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Starter
Jackson Murry and two relievers --
Cross Dowd and
Ethan Froud -- combined on a two-hit shutout. Murry (2-0) limited the Jets (5-42, 2-31 MIAA) to one hit over 5.0 inning of work. He issued one walk and registered four strikeouts. Dowd and Froud each tossed a scoreless inning behind Murray. Dowd allowed one hit and Froud tossed a clean inning with a strikeout.
The Gorillas (38-8, 25-8 MIAA) scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the second frame to break the game open early; and Pitt State tacked on a six-run sixth inning to help secure the run-rule victory.
Cooper Wesslund and
Cooper Harris each homered in the game. Wesslund drove in a team-leading five runs and scored three times. Harris added a double and three RBI to his stat line.
Dagen Brewer and
Isaac Webb had two hits apiece.
The Gorillas will close out the regular season by traveling to Topeka for a three-game MIAA series against Washburn University beginning Friday (May 1).
