St. Petersburg, Fla. - The Pittsburg State University volleyball team began the 2026 season with a convincing opening match sweep over Wilmington University (Del.) at the McArthur Center to begin the Eckerd Classic on Thursday (Aug. 27).
Pittsburg State (1-0) claimed the match with set scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-10.
For the Gorillas,
Maddi LaPointe led the team with 13 kills with three assisted blocks to account for a team-high 14.5 points.
Mason Palace finished with eight kills, eight digs and three total blocks for 10.5 points.
Jesa Wallace dished out a team leading 25 assists with
Brynna Zoeller accounting for 11 assists.
Kassidy Nixon led the team with 12 digs.
Crystal Smith led the match with four total blocks, while accounting for 10.0 points from seven kills at a .500 hitting percentage.
Up next for Pitt State will be a two-match Friday (Aug. 28) starting at 11:00 a.m. (CT) against Puerto Rico - Mayaguez and ends with a 4:00 p.m. (CT) tentative first serve against North Greenville at the McArthur Center on the campus of Eckerd College.
