SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Pittsbug State University volleyball team ended the MIAA/GAC Crossover with wins over No. 24 Oklahoma Baptist and Ouachita Baptist on Friday (Sept. 11) at the Noble Complex on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist.
The Gorillas (11-1) are off to the best since through 12 games since the 2007 season, with PSU starting 11-1 as well that fall.
Pitt State claimed the five set reverse sweep win over No. 24 OBU (9-4) 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13. The Gorillas ended the day with a sweep over Ouachita Baptist (5-7) with set scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-18.
Crystal Smith finished the match against Oklahoma Baptist with 28.0 points from 22 kills (.450) and 12 assisted blocks for her first 20-10 double-double as a Gorilla.
Vix Vilott (13) and
Maddi LaPointe (10) finished second and third on the team in the match for kills.
Jesa Wallace (28) and
Brynna Zoeller (26) split setting duties while
Kassidy Nixon (29),
Mason Palace (17) and Wallace (13) were the leading performers for digs.
Against OUA, LaPointe led the team with 16.5 points from 13 kills (.400) and six total blocks. Smith finished with eight kills (.467) and four total blocks to account for 10.5 points. Wallace (20) and Zoeller (12) split setting duties with Nixon finishing with a team-high 18 digs.
As a team at the MIAA/GAC Crossover the Gorillas hit .260 (Opponents hit .106) with 13.13 kills, 3.47 blocks and 17.07 digs a set.
Up next for Pittsburg State will be the start of MIAA action against Emporia State on Friday (Sept. 18) at John Lance Arena. The Hornets are 12-1 on the season and ranked No. 25 in the Sept. 7 edition of the AVCA Division II Poll.
