Volleyball Adds Two Wins in Day Two

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State Volleyball team improved its record to 4-0 on the season with wins over Bemidji State and William Jewell in the final day of the Pitt State Classic. 

Pitt State took its first match over Bemidji State by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-22. The Gorilla offense was strong, hitting at a .351 clip, including .441 in the first set and .381 in the second set. Pitt State tallied 53 kills to just 38 for the Beavers. The teams were equal in assists and digs, but Pitt State's defense oublocked Bemidji, 7.0 to 2.0.

Crystal Whitten and Brooke Fay each recorded double digit kills. Whitten led the team with 14 and Fay added 12. Whitten had only two errors in the match to record a .500 hitting percentage. Fay also added to service aces and a block to her point scoring effort. Becca Pearson recorded 24 assists and Hayley Hansford added 16. Paula Okrutna and Chloe Foster led the team in blocks with four a piece. Christa McCaw helped defensively with 11 digs. Sam Wyatt added eight.

The win over William Jewell proved to be a thriller. None of the four sets were decided by more than two points. William Jewell took the first set 30-28, but Pitt State won the next three straight 25-23, 26-24 and 25-23.

The Gorillas recorded a season-high 12 team blocks. Chloe Foster led the team with seven blocks, two solo and five block assists. Crystal Whitten added three blocks and Brooke Fay and Nicole Rockhold each had two. The Cardinals recorded only five team blocks.

Pitt State finished with three more kills and nine more digs. The teams were even in service aces.

Whitten, Rockhold and Pearson recorded the first double-doubles of the season for Pitt State. Whitten led the team with 16 kills and added 15 digs. Rockhold shared the team lead in digs with 16 and added 12 kills. Pearson led the team with 41 assists and added 11 digs. Fay also recorded double digit kills with 14. Foster was just under double digit kills with eight. .

Sam Wyatt also shared the team lead in digs with 16. McCaw added 11 digs.

The Gorillas will travel to Bolivar, Mo. next weekend for the SBU Purple Bash. The Gorillas will play East Central (Oklahoma) and Saint Leo on Friday and Christian Brothers and Harding on Sunday.
