Opening Tip
Pitt State takes a road trip to mid-MIssouri this week. The Gorillas open the week on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. game in Jefferson City, then will stay on the road and head to Warrensburg for a 1:30 p.m. meeting with the Jennies on Saturday.
Scouting Lincoln
Lincoln is 7-5 on the season overall and 2-2 in league play. Most recently, the team earned a 77-65 win over Southwest Baptist in Jefferson City. The two league losses were to Nebraska-Kearney and Truman. The team also faced Missouri Western in a non-conference game and lost, 65-57. Quincy is another opponent Lincoln has had in common with the Gorillas. The Blue Tigers also beat Quincy, 75-62.
The Blue Tigers average 67.3 points per game, only about two points per game over their opponents at 65.4. Rebounding is about even between Lincoln and its opponents, 37.2 to 37.0. The team shoots .406 from the floor and .369 from three-point range. They turn the ball over about 17 times per game.
Lincoln has three players scoring in double figures, led by Arriana Walker with 14.3 ppg. Walker also leads the team in assists (52) and steals (43). Freddie Sims adds 14.0 and Dahlia Booker chips in 10.9. Alicia Johnson in the team’s leading rebounder with 7.3 rpg and has blocked 19 shots on the season.
Scouting Central Missouri
Central Missouri is 10-1 and 2-1 in MIAA play heading into their Wednesday (Jan. 9) matchup against MIAA newcomer, Northeastern State. The Jennies are on a five game winning streak, with their last two victories coming by five (76-71) over Arkansas Tech and three (69-66) against Southwest Baptist
UCM currently has four players scoring in double figures. After missing the team’s first seven games Keuna Flax has led the Jennies in scoring, averaging 24.8 ppg. The junior forward is shooting .527 (29-55) from the field, .500 (8-16) from beyond the arc and .868 (33-38) from the charity stripe. Flax is also second on the team averaging 7.3 rpg. Shelby Winkelmann is currently averaging 17.6 ppg, but has not appeared in the last three games for Central Missouri. When the freshman guard is on the floor she is shooting a team-high .598 (55-92) from the field and also averages 5.4 rpg. Junior guard BreAnna Lewis averages 16.5 ppg and leads the team with 28 assists through 11 games. Senior forward Nicole Caddell rounds out the scoring leaders for the Jennies. The 2012 All-MIAA selection averages 12.6 points and a team-high 10.6 rebounds per contest. Caddell also leads UCM in blocked shots (15) and steals (30).
Collectively the Jennies are shooting .431 (301-699) from the field, .399 (81-203) from three-point territory and .673 (181-269) from the free throw line. UCM averages 78.5 ppg, which leads the MIAA. They limit their opponents to 67.4 ppg.
Scouting Pittsburg State
Pitt State has gone 9-3 overall and 3-1 in its first four MIAA games. The team’s losses came at the hands of William Jewell, Central Oklahoma and Academy of Art. The Gorillas are currently second in the league, tied with Truman and Northeastern State all with 3-1 records..
Pitt State is hitting 44.3 percent of its shots from the floor, while holding opponents to a 35.8 percent shooting percentage. Pitt State has held its last two opponents each to under 50 points. The team is outscoring opponents by 16.1 points per game, 73.6 to 57.5. The Gorillas are also tough on the glass, outrebounding their foes 41.3 to 34.7. Pitt State shoots .323 from three pointrange and .738 from the charity stripe.
Pitt State has only one player scoring in double figures, as Lizzy Jeronimus scores nearly 20 points per game at 18.9 ppg. Morgan Westhoff comes off the bench to score 8.9 ppg as the Gorillas’ second leading scorer. Jeronimus also leads Pitt State in assists with 35 and is the second-leading rebounder with 6.6 rpg. Westhoff is the team’s top three-point shooter, as she has made 22 of 46 threes on the year for a .478 shooting percentage from long range. Lauren Brown leads the team in rebounds with 8.8 rpg after setting the school record with 22 rebounds against Northwest Missouri. Brown also leads the team in blocked shots with 19. Freshman Kylie Gafford is just behind her with 16 blocks on the year. Hailey Roderique is the team’s third leading scorer with 7.8 ppg and is the third leading rebounder with 4.8 rpg. She leads the team in steals with 16.
PSU vs. Lincoln
Although LIncoln is a fairly new member of the MIAA, they are no strangers to the Gorillas, as the teams are former conference foes. Pitt State lost its first game ever to the Blue Tigers last year in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament, 83-77. Pitt State is 12-0 at home and 11-0 in Jefferson City, while holding a 2-1 record at neutral sites.
The largest margin of victory in the series was 53 points in a 78-35 win in Pittsburg on Dec. 12, 1998. Pittsburg has won games agaisnt Lincoln by at least 10 points in 20 of the 22 meetings.
Pitt State won the game in Pittsburg last season by just five points. The narrow vicotry was the second smallest margin of victory over for the Gorillas against the Blue Tigers.
PSU vs. Central Missouri
Central Missouri leads the series between the two teams, 25-21. Each team leads on its home court, with Pitt State holding an 14-7 advantage in Pittsburg and UCM leading 18-5 in Warrensburg. Neutral meetings are tied at one game a piece.
For the first time since the 2006-07 season, the two teams did not split the regular season series. Pitt State won all three meetings between the two teams, including a win in the NCAA Regional Tournament in Topeka. That is the longest streak of wins by the Gorillas.
The largest margin of victory by either team was a 25-point UCM win (78-53) on Jan. 3, 2000 in Pittsburg. The largest PSU win was 17 points, three different times, Jan. 12, 1998 (70-53), Jan. 13, 1999 (71- 54) and Jan. 23, 1999 (65-48).
Central Missouri had a streak of five consecutive wins two times, from Jan. 3, 2000 to Feb. 28, 2001 and Dec. 30, 2004 to Dec. 9, 2006.

Pitt State will finish its three game road trip with its first game of the season against rival Missouri Southern on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The team then will return to John Lance Arena for a home game against No. 18 Fort Hays State at 1:30 p.m. on January 19.
