PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Gorillas look to rebound from a tough week last week with five of their next six games at home, including two this week. PItt State will face Nebraska-Kearney at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 22) and Fort Hays State on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 1:30 p.m.
Scouting Nebraska-Kearney
The Lopers are 6-9 overall and 3-6 in MIAA play. The team has lost four of its last five games, including back-to-back games last week to Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State. The team's three conference wins were over Northwest Missouri, Lindenwood and Lincoln.
The Lopers average 68.9 ppg, while allowing opponents 71.5 ppg. The team outrebounds its opponents by 2.5 rpg, 41.5 to 49.0. UNK shoots .396 from the floor overall, including .328 from three-point range. Opponents shoot at a slightly higher percentage overall, .398, but a lower percentage from long range, .291. The Lopers average almost 20 turnovers per game.
Two players average double figures, with three more averaging around eight points per game. Amarah Williams leads the team with 10.9 ppg, a .531 shooting percentage and 18 blocks. Shelby Zimmerman adds 10.5 ppg and leads the team with 7.7 rpg. Sydney Seberger scores 8.5 ppg and is second on the team with 16 threes made in the season and makes 44 percent of her shots from long range. Laramey Lewis adds 8.3 ppg. Scouting Fort Hays State
Fort Hays State is 12-3 overall and 6-3 in league play. The team's three losses were to Central Missouri, Missouri Southern and, most recently, a one-point, 48-49, loss to Northeastern State in Tahlequah on Saturday. The Tigers have not lost back-to-back games at any point this season.
Fort Hays State averages 83.4 ppg, while allowing opponents only 57.5 ppg. The team outrebounds its opponents by 9.0, 46.1 to 37.1. The team hits 44 percent of its shots from the floor and 33 percent from three-point range. The team commits only 12 turnovers a game. Defensively, the Tigers allow oppoents only a .353 shootingpercentage, including .319 from long range. The team gets just over 10 steals a game and almost eight blocks a game.
Kate Lehman leads the Tigers as she averages a double-double with 15.8 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. She already has 81 blocked shots on the season for an average of just over five per game. Scouting Pittsburg State
The Gorillas are looking to rebound from back-to-back losses to Emporia State and Washburn. Though the team has six losses on the season, only two were by double digits and only the loss to Quincy by more than 10. The Washburn loss is the only one that was against a team not ranked or receiving votes.
The Gorillas outscore their opponents by 5.4 ppg, 72.8 to 67.4. The team is just barely hanging on to a positive rebounding margin, 37.1 to 36.9 rpg. Pitt State shoots .433 from the floor and .323 from three-point range. The team averages just over 12 turnovers a game.
Despite not scoring in double figures for the first time since her freshman season against Washburn, Lizzy Jeronimus continues to lead the Gorillas and rank among the best in the MIAA with 18.9 points per game. In the three games prior to the Washburn game she had averaged 26.0 ppg. Jeronimus also leads the Gorillas with 7.0 rpg, 36 assists and 16 steals. She is second on the team with 14 blocked shots. Alexa Bordewick is second on the team with 7.9 ppg. She is also the second-leading three-point shooter with 25 on the season and is second in assists with 31. She has almost a 2.0 assists/turnover ratio. Morgan Westhoff comes off the bench to add 7.4 ppg as the team's top three-point shooter with 28 threes made this season and a .389 three-point shooting percentage. Cathy Brugman adds 6.1 ppg, but has really stepped up in conference play. She averages 9.0 ppg is conference games only. Alex Muff is the team's seconf leading rebounder with 4.5 rpg and leads the team in offensive rebounds on the season. Kylie Gafford is the top shot blocker with 20 blocks this season. Y'Cedria Devers shares the team lead in steals with Jeronimus with 16.
PSU vs. Nebraska-Kearney
Pitt State leads the series with Nebraska-Kearney 17-12. The two teams met twice a year every season from 1976-77 to 1988-89 as part of Central States Intercollegiate Conference play. The teams also met in two non-conference games in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. The last meeting was Dec. 30, 1994 in Kearney. The Gorillas won, 80-67.
The two teams resumed regular meetings last year when the Lopers joined the MIAA. PItt State won the first MIAA meeting between the two teams, 62-42 in Pittsburg on Jan. 3, 2013.
The longest streak of wins in the series was six by Pittsburg State from Jan. 22, 1982 to Feb. 3, 1984. The longest streak of wins by the Lopers was five to start the series from Jan. 28, 1977 to Jan. 27, 1979.
The largest margin of victory in the series is 32 points by the Gorillas in a 81-49 win on January 22, 1982 in Pittsburg. The largest win by the Lopers was in the first game of the series on Jan. 28, 1977, a 69-39 UNK win in Kearney.
There has been one overtime game in the series, which Pitt State won 79-73 on Feb. 16, 1985. The most points scored in the series was 100 by the Gorillas on Feb. 19, 1989.
PSU vs. Fort Hays State
Fort Hays leads the all-time series with Pitt State 23-21, though Pitt State has won five of the last six meetings between the two teams and eight of the last 10. Pitt State leads the series 12-10 in PIttsburg, but the Tigers lead 13-9 in Hays. The two teams have never met at a neutral site.
The longest streak of wins in the series was seven by the Tigers in the first seven meetings between the two teams from Jan.11, 1975 to Jan. 26, 1979. Pitt State's streak of five victories from Jan. 16, 2010 when PSU beat FHSU 71-65 in Pittsburg until the 72-61 loss in Hays in 2012 was the longest streak for the Gorillas.
The most points scored by either team in a game was 101 by Pitt State in a 101-94 win in Pittsburg on Feb. 1, 1986. The largest margin of victory in the series was 56 points by FHSU in the first meeting. PSU's largest margin of victory has been 22 points on Jan. 30, 1981.
