Gorilla Women Set for Games Four and Five in Maryville

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Pitt State travels to a familiar locale to match up with two not-so-familiar opponents at the Winstead-Reeves Classic in Maryville, Mo. The Gorillas will pick up another important game against Minnesota-Duluth and another against a more local foe, William Jewell.

Scouting Minnesota-Duluth
The Bulldogs enter the Winstead-Reeves Classic with a 1-1 record. The team lost to Michigan Tech by one point, 59-58, to open the season. On Tuesday, the team earned a 73-63 win over Wisconsin-Superior.
    Four players have averaged double figures UMD's first two games. Taylor Meyer averages a team-leading double-double with 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Eleven of her 21 rebounds have been off the offensive glass. Allyson Harris adds 12.0 ppg, Jessica Newman, 10.5, and Danielle Flood, 10.0.
    As a team, the Bulldogs shoot .355 (39-110) from the floor and .318 (7-22) from three-point range. They outscore opponents 65.5 to 61.0 and have out rebounded opponents by an average of 4.0 per game.        
Scouting William Jewell
Four players scored in double figures to help the William Jewell College women's basketball team earn an 84-52 season-opening home win against Avila on Monday in Liberty.
    Maddie Nelson led the Cards with 15 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field.  Aerial Smith added 14 points, 7 rebounds and four assists while Kelsey Nickerson and
Hayli Jo Smith were also in double figures for Jewell each scoring 12.
    Jewell held the advantage on the boards, 38-34 and the Cards shot 45.5-percent from the field including 10-26 from three point land.
    
Scouting Pittsburg State
    Pitt State had solid contributions from most of its roster on the opening weekend of play, as the No. 24 Gorillas went 3-0 with wins over No. 10 Concordia, Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State.
    Three different Gorillas led the team in each of the first three games. Freshman Mikaela Burgess led against Concordia with 19 and a 4-for-5 performance from long range. Cathy Brugman stepped up against Bemidji State with 16 points. Lizzy Jeronimus was in her usual form against Southwest Minnesota State with 15 points. Kylie Gafford worked the boards for the Gorillas, leading the team in rebounding in each of the first three games, with Jeronimus also sharing the lead against Bemidji State
    Four Gorillas averaged double figures in the first three games, led by Jeronimus with 17.0 ppg. Gafford added 13.0 ppg, while leading the team with 7.7 rebounds per game. She laso led the team with six steals and eight blocks. Brugman added 11.7 ppg and led the team in assists with 3.0 per game. Burgess averaged 11.3 ppg and led the team with seven threes made and a .600 overall shooting percentage.
    Pitt State averages 77.7 ppg, while holding opponents to 62.7 ppg. The team outrebounds opponents by almost three, 37.7 rpg to 35.0 rpg. The Gorillas have a 1-1 assist to turnover ratio, avering 14.0 of each per game.

PSU vs. Opponents
Pitt State and Minnesota-Duluth have met only time, last season in Rolla, Mo. The Gorillas took an 82-75 win.
    William Jewell holds a 3-1 advantage over the Gorillas in the all-time series. The Cardinals won the first three meetings, but the Gorillas won the last meeting, last season in Liberty.

In the Polls
The Pittsburg State women's basketball team is ranked No. 24 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Preseason Poll.
    Four Pitt State opponents are ranked in the top 25, No. 3 Drury, No. 7 Emporia State, No. 10 Concordia St. Paul and No. 20 Central Missouri. Three additional opponents are receiving votes, Wingate, Washburn and Truman State.

Up Next
The Gorillas make a trip to Kirksville, Mo. to take on former MIAA foe, Truman, on Wednesday. The team will then travel to Springfield, Mo. for the Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic, where the team will meet its second ranked foe of the year in No. 3 Drury on Friday and Rockhurst on Saturday.
