Gorilla Women Overcome Slow Start to Defeat Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team overcame a slow start to earn a 16-point, 66-50, win over the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers on Thursday (Feb. 13) evening.

The Gorillas were held to just 6-of-22 from the floor in the early part of the first half and were trailing 21-10 with nine minutes left in the first half. The team worked its way back and finishes the half 6-for-13 and ourscored the Lopers 17-4 in the last nine minutes of the half to lead by two, 27-25 at intermission.

Pitt State started to pull away early in the second half and a layup by Alexa Bordewick with 13:08 to go gave Pitt State its first lead of the game, 45-34. The team earned a 20-point lead, 60-40 on a LIzzy Jeronimus layup with 3:45 left in the game.

The Gorillas shot only .343 in the first half, but was .515 during the second half, contributing to the win. The Gorilla defense was also able to hold the Lopers to only .333 shooting overall for the game. The team had 12 steals, helping to force the 21 Loper turnovers. Free throws were not really a factor in the game, as there were only 22 fouls called and the teams shot a total of 18 free throws between them.

Jeronimus led all scorers with 20 points. She also had three assists and five rebounds. Cathy Brugman added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. She also had three blocks and two steals. Antqunita Reed scored 12 points off the bench and added five rebounds. Alexa Bordewick scored eight points and grabbed a team-high four steals. Y'Cedria Devers pulled down six rebounds.

Shelby Zimmerman scored 14 points for the Lopers and Amarah Williams added 10. 

Pitt State will travel to Hays, Kan. for a 1:30 p.m. game against the Tigers on Saturday (Feb. 15).
