Gorillas Reach 20-Win Mark With 63-46 Road Win Over NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team built a 21-point second-half lead and cruised to a 63-46 victory over Northeastern State University Wednesday (Feb. 19) to reach the 20-win plateau on the season.

The Gorillas, who posted their ninth consecutive victory, stayed a game behind MIAA co-leaders Central Missouri (20-3, 14-2) and Emporia State (23-2, 14-2) in the conference standings, improving to 20-6 overall and 13-3 in MIAA play. The RiverHawks dropped to 10-13 overall, 7-9 in the MIAA.

Cathy Brugman led the Pitt State scoring effort with 13 points, all of which came after intermission. Brugman also pulled down three rebounds and added two blocks. Lizzy Jeronimus and Antqunita Reed both tallied 12 points on the evening. Jeronimus added a team-high five rebounds, while Reed totaled a team-high three steals.

Northeastern State's Chelsey Beathard recorded a game-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Carrington Fox added 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the RiverHawks.

The Gorillas led 38-24 at the half after a 3-point jumper by Hayden Herlocker beat the buzzer.

The two sides traded buckets for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Gorillas were able to prevent the RiverHawks from being able to close the gap.

Pitt State wraps up a four-game road swing Saturday (Feb. 22) when the Gorillas travel to Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. (CST).
