  PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Pitt State, now the No. 23 team in the nation, will play its last two regular season games at home this week. The Gorillas have already locked up a first round bye in the MIAA Tournament and are guaranteed to finish no lower than third. The team will take on current league leaders No. 5 Emporia State on Wednesday at 5:30 and Washburn on Saturday at 1:30. The teams are two of the three MIAA teams to earn wins over the Gorillas this season.

Scouting Emporia State

The No. 5 Lady Hornets are 25-2 overall and 16-2 in conference play. Wednesday is the team's final regular season game. 

The only two teams to have beaten the Lady Hornets this season were Northeastern State, 59-44, and Fort Hays State, 72-57, both on the road.

The Hornets average 75.5 points per game, compared to just 59.7 for their opponents. The team has a +10.2 rebounding margin on its opponents, 44.1 to 33.9 rpg. The team shoots at a .430 clip overall and .332 from three-point range. The team commits only 14.1 turnovers per game and dishes out 15.6 assists per game. They also average 6.3 steals and 6.3 blocks per game.

Emporia State has two players averaging double figures, led by Laura Patrick with 14.1 ppg. She is the team's top three-point shooter, having made 70-of-184 on the season for a .380 3-point shooting percentage. She makes 2.6 threes a game. Merissa Quick adds 11.7 ppg and is the team's second leading rebounder with 7.2 rpg. She also leads the team in blocks with 74. Kionna Kellog is the third leading scorer, just under double figures with 9.6 ppg. Desiree Wylie is the team's leading rebounder, coming off the bench to grab 7.5 rebounds per game. Rheanna Egli leads the team in assists with 104 and steals with 26. She scores 8.5 ppg.

Scouting Washburn

Washburn is 16-9 overall and 11-7 in MIAA play. The team has gone 6-4 since its win over the Gorillas on Jan. 18. The loss to Washburn was the last loss for the Gorillas, as they have since been on a 10-game win streak. In their last outing, the Ichabods lost to rival Emporia State, 70-53. The team will not have a midweek game this week. 

Washburn is currently fifth in the league standings and has clinched one of the 5-8 spots in the MIAA Tournament. They will host a first round game in Lee Arena on Monday, March 3 at 7 p.m.

Washburn averages 71.8 ppg, 6.5 more than its opponents at 65.3 ppg. The team has a +6.7 rebounding average, 41.5 rpg to 34.8 rpg.  The Ichabods shoot .426 overall and .307 from three-point range. The team averages just 14.3 turnovers per game, while dishing out 15.0 assists per game. 

The Ichabods have four players averaging double figures, and two more just under. Casyn Buchman leads the team with 14.6 ppg. She has made 33 threes on the season, second-most on the team. She is also second on the team in rebounding with 6.4 rpg. She leads the team in assists with 102 and steals with 44. Taylor Ignoto is the second-leading scorer with 12.5 ppg, though she has only played in 17 games with nine starts. Brittney Lynch adds 10.5 ppgs while leading the team with 9.2 rpg. She leads the team with a .550 shooting percentage overall. Honor Duval adds 10.2 ppg. Janelle Travis is just below double figures at 9.7 ppg and leads the team with 53 threes made on the year. She is also second in assists with 88. Kara Lee is also just under double figures with 9.4 ppg. She makes .522 of her shots overall.

Scouting Pittsburg State

The Gorillas have now won 10 straight games, the longest win streak of the season. Five of those wins have come in the friendly confines of John Lance Arena. The team is currently third in the MIAA standings behind only Emporia State and Central Missouri. If the Gorillas would win out, they could possibly move to second. Either way, the team will play an evening game in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals in Kansas City on Thursday, March 6 at Municipal Auditorium. 

This week is bound to be an exciting end to the season, as the Gorillas will face two of the three conference teams that beat them earlier in the season.

Five of the six Gorilla losses were to teams either ranked or receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches Poll. The six losses have been by an average of less than nine points a game. The Gorillas are 10-1 in John Lance Arena and 7-3 on the road.

The Gorillas outscore their opponents by 7.7 ppg, 72.1 to 64.4. Rebounding stays close between Pitt State and its opponents, 38.0 to 37.2, less than a +1 margin for the Gorillas. Pitt State shoots .431 from the floor and .328 from three-point range. The team averages just over 13 turnovers a game.

Lizzy Jeronimus continues to lead the Gorillas and ranks among the best in the MIAA with 19.1 points per game. Jeronimus also leads the Gorillas with 6.6 rpg, 67 assists and 24 steals. She is second on the team with 25 blocked shots. 

Cathy Brugman has been on fire in conference play. After scoring in double figures in each of the last six games and nine of the last 11, Brugman is now the team's second-leading scorer with 8.8 ppg. She posted a career-high 24 points against Central Oklahoma on Feb. 8. She is shooting a team-high .506 overall and .441 (30-for-68) from three-point range. All but one of her threes she has made in conference play.

Antqunita Reed scores 7.7 ppg and has really gotten more comfortable on the court as of late. The athletic junior has scored in double figures off the bench in seven of the last eight games. Ten of her 12  double figure scoring games have come in league play.

Alexa Bordewick adds 6.9 ppg. She is one of three players on the team that have made 30 or more threes on the season with 31 threes made. She is second on the team in assists with 45 and has a 1.8 assists/turnover ratio. 

Morgan Westhoff comes off the bench to add 5.7 ppg as the team's leading three-point shooter with 34 threes made this season. Y'Cedria Devers is the team's second-leading rebounder with 4.2 rebounds per game. The tenacious guard leads the team with 55 offensive rebounds on the season. Kylie Gafford is the top shot blocker with 39 blocks this season. She and Y'Cedria Devers each have 19 steals on the season. Point guard Brigit Hesser has been crucial off the bench for the Gorillas, especially with her passing, as she has 42 assists on the season and a 1.6 assists/turnover ratio.

PSU vs. Emporia State

The series between Pitt State and Emporia State has been a very lopsided one, with Emporia leading the series 50-24, though Pitt State has won seven of the last nine meetings, including a sweep of the Lady Hornets in two of the last three regular season series and a win in the NCAA South Central Regional final in 2012. The two teams split meetings last year, with each winning on the other's home court. Emporia State won the earlier meeting this season, 80-78, at Emporia.

Emporia State won five in a row before the Gorillas took a 71-66 victory in PIttsburg on Feb. 17, 2010.

Prior the Gorillas recent seven-game win streak, Pitt State had not won back to back games in the series since winning three straight from Feb. 8, 1995 to Jan. 18, 1997. Emporia also won 13 of the first 14 meetings between the two teams. The longest streak of wins in the series was nine games by ESU from Jan. 5, 1998 to Feb. 21, 2001. Pitt State's longest streak of wins was the seven game streak from Feb. 17, 2010 to Feb. 20, 2013.

Scores in the series have also been very lopsided toward ESU, though eight of the last nine games have been decided by less than 10 points. The Hornets have won 17 games by 20 or more points, while Pitt State has only won one game by that margin, a 35-point win in Pittsburg on Jan. 7, 2002. The largest win in the series was an 85-point Emporia win on Dec. 11, 1975.

PSU vs. Washburn

Washburn has a decisive 50-25 lead in the all-time series against the Gorillas. Pitt State broke a 16-game losing streak to the Lady Blues with a 94-87 win on Jan. 21, 2009. The Gorillas added another win in the 2009-10, with a 58-57 overtime win in Pittsburg on Jan. 13. Washburn has won seven consecutive games over the Gorillas, with all but one being by double figures.

Each of the last three games between the two teams have been played in Topeka.

Prior to the 2009 win Pitt State had not won a game against Washburn since a 69-57 win on Feb. 10, 2001 in Topeka.         

Washburn leads the series 21-14 in Pittsburg, 26-11 in Topeka and 2-0 at neutral sites. The longest streak of wins in the series is Washburn's 16-game streak from Feb. 23, 2002 to Jan. 14, 2009. Pitt State longest win streak was eight games from Jan. 8, 1997 to Jan. 15, 2000.

The biggest margin of victory in the series was 65 points in a Washburn 101-36 win in the very first meeting on Jan .18, 1975. Pitt State's biggest win was 20 points on Jan. 28, 1978 in a 72-52 victory in Topeka.

Up Next

Pitt State has locked up a first round bye for the MIAA Tournament. The Gorillas are ensured an evening game in the MIAA Quarterfinals in Kansas City. The outcome of this week's games will determine whether the Gorillas will play at 6 or 8:30 p.m. The team's first opponent will not be decided until after Monday night's first round games at campus sites. 

Cathy in Conference

As stated earlier, Cathy Brugman has really stepped up her play for the Gorillas in conference games. Not only does her scoring average jump from 8.8  ppg overall to 11.6 in conference games, but she also shoots a team-best .506 from the floor and 44 percent from three-point range. Twenty-nine of the 30 threes she has made this season have been against conference opponents. Her three-point percentage is second in the MIAA in conference games only with a .509 (29-57).

Brugman has scored in double figures in nine of her last 11 games, including each of the last six. The remaining two games she scored nine points. She led the Gorillas with a career-high 24 points against Central Oklahoma on Feb. 8.

Free Throw Queen

Against Missouri Southern, Lizzy Jeronimus set a new school record for free throws made in a season. Jeronimus has now made 197 free throws this season, besting the record set by Leslie Dudley in 2000, 182. Jeronimus is only 24 free throws from setting a new MIAA record for free throws made in a season. The current record is 220, set by Missouri Southern's Melissa Grider during the 1995-96 season. 

Jeronimus ranks third on the PSU list for career free-throws made with 484. She is 53 from second place. She makes just over seven free throws a game, so will not quite be on pace to get to second this season. Leslie Dudley holds the school and MIAA record for career free throws made with 563.

Jeronimus also now holds the record for free throws attempted in a season with 234. She is third on the career attempts list with 599. She is still far from the MIAA season attempts record, as Grider also holds that record with 292. Dudley holds both the school and MIAA attempts records with 718. 

She Shoots, She Scores

Junior Lizzy Jeronimus is one of 17 players in school history to score 1,000 points in her career. She finished her sophomore season with 1,020 points, having scored them in 60 games, second fastest to the 1,000 point mark in school history. Now with 1,537 points, Jeronimus is the sixth leading all-time scorer, passing Ann Woloszyk with 1,514 points. She needs 23 points to pass Kami Scrivner and move into fifth place. Scrivner scored 1,559 points from 2002-05. If Jeronimus keeps up her current season scooring average of 19.1 ppg, she will finish the regular season with 1,575 points, which would put her in fifth place. Since the Gorillas are ensured at least one MIAA Tournament game, Jeronmus' current average could boost her as high as fourth by the end of the season. 

Jeronimus has scored in double figures in all but eight games in her career. She has scored 20 points or more in 14 of 27 games this season and in 35 career games.

Westhoff & Bordewick for THREEEEEE

Junior Morgan Westhoff has hit 34 threes this season, including a career-high seven threes against Indianapolis. She is only the third person to make seven or more threes in a game in school history. Kara Kinney made eight threes twice in the 2005-06 season. Pitt State's prolific three-point shooting Jenni Miller hit eight threes in a game three times in her career, nine threes once and a school record 11 threes on Jan. 28, 1995 against Truman. 

Westhoff has made 101 threes in her third year at Pitt State. 

Alexa Bordewick has made 31 on the season, including several crucial threes in close games and six threes in the loss to Washburn on January 18. She has made 161 threes in her career, the third-most in school history. 

Another Milestone

Lizzy Jeronimus grabbed her 500th career rebound against Lincoln on Jan. 6. She is one of only six players in schoool history to grab more then 500 rebounds and score more than 1,000 points. She currently has 584 career rebounds which puts her in seventh on the all-time rebounding list. She needs six more to move to sixth, 11 to fifth and 13 to fourth. With her current average, Jeronimus is on track to finish the regular season with 597 rebounds, which would place her fourth on the career list.

Jeronimus needs just four more rebounds to surpass her total from her sophomore season.

Jeronimus also has 236 career assists and needs just three more to be in the career top 10 for that category as well. She will be only the second player in school history to be in the top 10 for points, rebounds and assists. The only other was Lisa Cropper who played from 1993-96. She finished her career with 1399 points, 538 rebounds and 500 assists. Jeronimus has already passed her in scoring and rebounding.
