No. 9 Gorillas Pull Away For 57-48 Win Over RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Ninth-ranked Pittsburg State University overcame a cold-shooting first half to pull away for a 57-48 road win over Northeastern State University Wednesday (Jan. 28) at the NSU Event Center.
 
The Gorillas improved to 18-3 overall and 8-2 in MIAA play, while the RiverHawks dropped to 9-10 overall (5-7 MIAA).
 
Pitt State made just 24 percent of its attempts, on 7 of 29 shooting, in the first half and managed just a 21-19 lead on NSU. Morgan Westhoff scored eight of her 14 points in the first half to help keep the Gorillas in front.
 
Pitt State warmed up in the final 20 minutes of play, shooting 53 percent from the field to pull away from the RiverHawks.
 
Lizzy Jeronimus finished with a game-high 15 points and added nine rebounds. She became just the second play in Pitt State history to eclipse 2,000 career points with a mid-range jumper with 3:49 to play in the first half.
 
Paige Lungwitz and Kylie Gafford chipped in with six points apiece for the Gorillas, while Antqunita Reed added four points and nine rebounds.
 
Pitt State owned a 17-10 advantage at the free throw line against NSU. The Gorillas converted 17 of 23 shots from the stripe.
 
Pitt State will face a short turnaround when the Gorillas return to John Lance Arena Thursday (Jan. 29) to host the University of Central Oklahoma in MIAA action at 7 p.m.
