Volleyball Takes Last Weekend Road Trip of the Season

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State volleyball team is looking to improve their record as they round out the road portion of their season this weekend against Lindenwood on Friday and No. 12 Central Missouri on Saturday. The first serve on Friday is at 7 p.m. and Saturday's match starts at 4 p.m.
 
Pittsburg State enters the weekend with just one win on the season, after falling to No. 14 Washburn and Emporia State on the road last weekend.
 
The Gorilla offense is led by Maggie Highberger and Lana DaSilva, who have 130 and 128 kills respectively and kill just under two balls per set. DaSilva has 49 total blocks on the season, while Taylor Unke contributes 44 total. Setting duo Taylyn Schwartz and Hayley Hansford collectively have 734 assists, handing them out at a rate of 4.60 assists per set each. Ashlen Schwartz ranks fourth in the conference for her back row performance with 316 total digs, while Taylor Wright adds 154.
 
Lindenwood dropped both matches on the road this weekend against No. 16 Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State. They now stand at 11-11 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The Gorillas fell to the Lady Lions in four sets on Sept. 25.
 
The Lions are led by freshmen Bailey Dvorak, who has a team-high 197 kills with 2.81 kps, while Kayla Guyot adds 152 kills and leads the team hitting a .332 clip. Sarah Makowski is strong at the net for the Lady Lions, recording 57 total blocks this season. Splitting the setting duties for Lindenwood are Sarah-Jane Pavlik and Allyson Clancy, who have 788 combined assists and dishes out 10.32 aps. Anna Reichert digs 4.07 balls per set and has 20 service aces on the season, followed closely by Alex Dahlstrom (19 aces) and Jessica Krygsheld (18 aces).
 
Central Missouri is 20-4 overall and are fifth in the conference with an 8-3 record. The Jennies swept Fort Hays State last Friday, but fell to No. 14 Nebraska-Kearney in a heartbreaker the next day. Pittsburg State took Central Missouri to five sets in their last match-up on Sept. 26, but the Jennies were victorious.
 
The Jennies sit atop the MIAA in assists (13.42 aps), kills (14.90 kps), and tie with Nebraska-Kearney with 1.41 service aces per set. Their .266 clip ranks second in the MIAA.
 
Carly Sojka leads the Central Missouri attack with 364 total kills. Maddie Jones, last week's MIAA Co-Hitter of the Week, hits a team-high .373 clip with 261 kills. Kasey Hohlen has blocked 45 attacks thus far, followed closely behind by Sojka with 44 and Jones with 43. Kourtney Thompson paces the team with 10.42 aps as the team's lone setter. Annie Reilly's 481 digs and 33 service aces ranks her first in the conference in both categories.
