TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Northeastern State University Friday (Feb. 13). The RiverHawks claimed an 18-4 victory in game one, before the Gorillas countered with a 7-5 decision in the nightcap.
In the opener, NSU scored three runs in the first and four more runs in the third inning to build a 7-1 lead. The RiverHawks, who pounded out 19 hits in the contest, added six more runs in the fourth and five in the fifth en route to the lopsided win.
The Gorillas committed four errors in the contest. Offensively Derek Hackney went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
In the nightcap, Pitt State struck early for a 6-0 lead, plating three runs in the first, two in the second and one more in the third inning. Hackney went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Gorillas 15-hit attack, while Andrew Vogelbaugh went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Jake Stevenson allowed three runs in 3 2/3 innings on the mound. Drake Herrman (1-0) scattered two hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief work and Ryan McKay got the final six outs to help secure the win.
The Gorillas and RiverHawks will change venues Saturday (Feb. 14), meeting at Al Ortolani Field for a Noon doubleheader.
