Regular Season Ends on the Road for Gorilla Women

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The No. 11 Pittsburg State women's basketball team will end the regular season on the road this week with a Wednesday (Feb. 24) 5:30 p.m. game at No. 12 Emporia State and a Saturday 5 p.m. game at Washburn.

The Lady Hornets are currently tied for 12th in the nation and third in the MIAA with a 21-4 overall record and a 14-4 record in MIAA. The team's four conference losses have been two Fort Hays State (two times), Central Missouri and Northeastern State. Emporia State won the last meeting with the Gorillas, 65-61, in overtime in Pittsburg. The Lady Hornets lead the all-time series 51-25, but Pitt State has won seven of the last 10. Wednesday will be the team's last regular season game.

The Lady Hornets outscore opponents by nearly 20 points on the season, 73.4 to 54.6. The team pulls down 44.1 rebounds per game, but turns the ball over over 14 times a game. Emporia State hits .432 of its shots overall and .355 from three-point range.

The Lady Hornets have three players averaging double figures on the season, with Kelly Moten leading the way with 14.6 ppg. Merissa Quick adds 11.6 ppg, and Addie Lackey, 10.6 ppg. Quick leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game and 92 blocked shots. Lackie leads the team with 37-of-83 threes for a .446 three-point shooting percentage. She also leads the team with 82 assists. Moten is one of three players with 30 or more steals on the season, leading the team with 38 on the seaosn.

Washburn comes into Saturday's game with a 16-10 overall record and an 8-10 record in MIAA contests. The team is currently eighth in the MIAA standings. The Ichabods will not have another game until facing the Gorillas on Saturday. They have lost three of their last four games. The team averages 68.9 points and 42.3 rebounds per game. They dish out 14.7 assists, while committing 13.5 turnovers per game. The team makes 42 percent of its shots from the floor and 30 percent from long range.

The Gorillas won the last meeting between the two teams, 60-40. It was only the Gorillas second win over Washburn in the last five years, the first coming last season in the last game of the year. Washburn leads the all-time series with the Gorillas 50-27.

Taylor leads the team with 14.6 points per game. Casyn Buchman add s12.7 ppg, and Honor Duvall, 11.8 ppg. Jayna Smith leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game. Ignoto and Buchman share the team lead with 44 threes made on the season. Buchman leads the team in assists with 88. Felisha Gibbs has the blocks lead with 20, while Duvall leads in steals with 21.

The Gorillas look to rebound from their overtime loss to Missouri Southern on Saturday. The team is 24-4 on the season and 14-3 in MIAA games. The three conferences losses were to Emporia State, Missouri Southern and Fort Hays State, with two of those being home losses. The Gorillas have an 16-2 record on the road or at neutral sites. The team is ranked No. 12 in the nation and is second in the MIAA.

The Gorillas scored 74.6 ppg to their opponents 57.8 ppg. The team outrebounds opponents by almost five 39.4 to 34.6 rpg. Pitt STate hits .431 from the floor overall and .334 from long range. The team dishes out 12.9 assists per game, while committing only 12.0 turnovers per game.

Lizzy Jeronimus is the team's leading scorer with 19.0 ppg. Kylie Gafford adds 10.6 ppg. Cathy Brugman is just under double figures with 9.8 ppg. Jeronimus also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game, and 61 assists. Gafford leads the team in steals with 33 and blocks with 44. Morgan Westhoff is the team's top three-point shooter, having made 50 threes on the season. Mikaela Burgess is just behind her with 42 threes made.
