PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team rode the strong pitching of Jake Stevenson and Ryan McKay to a 3-1 victory in game one, before Missouri Western State University countered with a 5-3 win in the nightcap of an MIAA doubleheader Saturday (Mar. 14) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (4-11, 1-5 MIAA) and Griffons (12-6, 8-2 MIAA) will wrap up the four-game series with a 1 p.m. (CDT) doubleheader Sunday (Mar. 15).
Stevenson (1-2) scattered six hits over six innings of work, taking a shutout bid into the seventh inning before issuing three straight singles to open the frame. McKay nailed down the save to secure the win.
Nate Arnold went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Sam Falcon also went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
In game two, the Griffons jumped out to a 5-0 lead, capitalizing on two Pitt State errors to score three unearned runs against Gorillas starter Blaine Fisher (1-2).
Pitt State plated two runs in the sixth and a third in the eighth but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Luke Bordewick went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Gorillas.
