TOPEKA -- Washburn University scored four runs in the first inning and rode the early lead to an 11-7 victory over Pittsburg State University in the opening action of a four-game MIAA series Friday (Mar. 6).
The Ichabods (11-0, 5-0 MIAA) and Gorillas (3-6, 0-1 MIAA) will return to Falley Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
Pitt State scored two runs in the top of the first inning on Nate Arnold's two-run double, before WU countered with the four-run outburst in their half of the opening frame. The Ichabods broke open a 5-3 game with three runs in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth to take control.
Arnold paced the Pitt State offensive, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Logan Terrell went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Luke Bordewick also belted a solo home run while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
