Ichabods Sweep Gorillas Saturday

TOPEKA — The Washburn University baseball team remained undefeated by sweeping a pair of games against Pittsburg State University Saturday (Mar. 7) at Falley Field. The Ichabods defeated the Gorillas, 2-1 and 8-3.

Pitt State and WU will close out its four-game MIAA series with a final game Sunday (Mar. 8) at 1 p.m.

In game one, Pitt State's Blaine Fisher and WU's Mike Hefferan (2-0) locked up in a pitchers dual. The Ichabods (13-0, 7-0 MIAA) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth inning against Fisher, before the Gorillas (3-8, 0-3 MIAA) countered by tieing the score in the top of the seventh against Hefferan.

Jack Mercer singled home Luke Bordewick with the tieing score in the seventh.

WU battled back to win the game, though, on Parker Gibson's sacrifice fly that plated pinch runner Cole Gardner. Corey Gragg opened the frame with a double off PSU reliever Ryan McKay. Gardner came on to run for Gragg, then advanced to third on a sacrifice.

In game two, WU overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring a run in the first, three in the second and two apiece in the third and fourth frames.

Nate Arnold led the Pitt State offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a double and two RBI.
