PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University and Lincoln University traded a pair of wins in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday (Apr. 15) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas claimed a 9-4 victory in game one, before the Blue Tigers fended off a late rally for 6-5 win in the nightcap.
Pitt State is now 14-23 on the season, while Lincoln improved to 3-35.
In game one, the Gorillas utilized six sacrifice flies en route to the win. Pitt State jumped in front 3-0, then battled back from a 4-3 deficit with two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and a final run in the sixth.
Derek Hackney went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Nate Arnold also went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Cort Lesmeister (2-3) allowed four runs in four innings of work. Drake Hermann, Blake Vail and Derek Jacobs combined to limit LU to one hit over the final three innings.
In game two, the Blue Tigers scored two in the second, two in the third and one run in the fourth to grab a 5-3 lead. Pitt State trimmed the margin to 5-4, but LU added a key insurance run in the top of the seventh. The Gorillas narrowed the gap to 6-5 on Cole Brecheisen's two-out double, but Tyler Roberts (1-4) induced Christian Arnold to pop out in foul territory to end the game.
Pitt State will have a quick turnaround time as the Gorillas will now open a four-game MIAA series against Central Oklahoma with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Thursday (Apr. 16). The series was pushed up a day due to the weekend weather forecast.
