Box Score 2 ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State softball team moved to 21-11 overall and 10-2 in MIAA play with a doubleheader split at Lindenwood on Friday (April 3) evening. The Gorillas won game one, 7-4, but fell in the second game, 5-3.
The Lions outhit the Gorillas in both games, 6-5 in game one, and 8-5 in game two. Pitt State took advantage of free bases for the win in game one and Lindenwood took advantage of a costly Gorilla error for the win in the second game.
Ashton Pratt recorded two of the Gorillas' five hits in game one, both for RBI. Katy Remy, Cheslyn Mitchell and Alex Perez had the remaining three hits. Catie Cummins walked three times in the game and did not record an at bat.
A Remy home run in the top of the first inning started the scoring.
The Gorillas added another run in the top of the third. Cummins led off the inning with a walk. Pratt hit her home with a double.
The big inning for Pitt State came in the fourth. Nicole Nease, Perez and Cummins drew walks to load the bases, alternated with outs. Jordan Bradshaw was hit by a pitch for an RBI to score Nease. Pratt added another RBI with a base hit. Remy reached on a fielder's choice that found all runners safe and allowed Cummins to score her second run of the game for a 5-0 Pitt State lead.
A bases loaded single in the bottom of the fourth scored two runs for the Lions to cut the Gorilla lead to three runs.
Pitt State got those two runs back in the top of the final inning on a two-run home run by Perez.
A hit, an error, a wild pitch, an illegal pitch and a stolen base brought home two runs for Lindenwood in its half of the seventh, but Gorilla pitcher Emmie Robertson struck out the next two batters and forced a ground out to third to end the game.
Robertson improved to 14-5 on the year with the win. She gave up six hits and two earned runs. She struck out 11 batters and did not walk any, though she did hit two batters. None of the six hits by the Lions were for extra bases.
Five different players recorded the Gorillas' five hits in game two, Remy, Nease, Perez, Devon McCreath and Bradshaw. Nease and Bradshaw each hit doubles.
The Gorillas scored first again in game two. Remy started with a one-out base hit. Mitchell reached on a fielder's choice that put Remy out at second. Nease drove Mitchell home with a double.
Lindenwood tied the game in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Brooklyn Sisk.
An error by the Gorilla defense with the bases loaded cleared the bases and gave the Lions a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the fourth.
A triple and a wild pitch increased the home team's lead further in the fifth.
Pitt State worked to come base in the top of the sixth. With one out and Nease on first, Kylie Guthier reached on a fielder's choice that put Nease out at second and gave the Gorillas their second out of the inning. Another fielder's choice left all runners safe. A strong bas ehit by McCreath brought home Guthier and Perez to cut the lead to 5-3. That would be all the scoring though, as the Gorillas went down in order in the top of the seventh.
Lynsey Conner took the loss in only her second decision of the season. Only two of the runs she gave up were earned. She struck out one batter and did not walk any. Robertson pitched the final inning for the Gorillas.
