PITTSBURG - Quarterback Derek McGinnis passed for 283 yards and three touchdowns and the Washburn University defense held No. 4 Pittsburg State University on a potential game tying drive in the game's final minute to lead the Ichabods to a 28-21 victory over the Gorillas Saturday (Sept. 19).

Washburn (2-1, 2-1 MIAA) built a 28-10 lead with 6:04 to play in the third quarter and then withstood a fourth quarter comeback bid by Pitt State (2-1, 2-1 MIAA) before a sellout crowd of 11,383 fans at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.

Pitt State's DeAndre Murray scored on a 16-yard run and quarterback John Roderique, Jr. tossed a 2-point conversion pass to tight end Kyle Swartz to trim the margin to 28-18 with 2:57 remaining in the third quarter.

Kicker Chad Levin booted a 30-yard field goal for the game's final margin with 7:12 to play in the game.

The Pitt State defense, which surrendered 457 yards of total offense in the game, forced a three and out, giving the Gorilla offense the ball back with 5:49 remaining in the game. Roderique found wide receiver Marquise Cushon open for a 31-yard gain on a 4th-and-22 play from the PSU 48, but the Ichabods defense stiffened in the red zone and held Pitt State on downs at the Washburn 17 with 31 seconds to play.

Roderique completed 16 of 33 passes for 256 yards with one interception in the game. Jeff Seybold, Jr. carried the ball 22 times for 102 yards, including a four-yard touchdown on Pitt State's opening drive of the game. Cushon had six catches for 93 yards.

Devron Moore made a game-high 11 tackles, while Deron Washington added 10 stops. Darnell Walker, Jr. made seven tackles and added four pass break-ups.

Brandon Bourbon carried the ball 18 times for 143 yards and a touchdown for the Ichabods, while Anthony Daniels had six catches for a game-high 107 yards and a score.

Pitt State will travel to Hays, Kan., next Saturday (Sept. 26) to face unbeaten Fort Hays State University at 7 p.m.
