Gorillas Take Control Late for 84-76 Win Over Jets


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's basketball team scored the game's final 12 points to overcome a four-point deficit with 3:31 to play and claim an 84-76 victory over Newman University Tuesday (Nov. 15).

Brandon Clifford's layup – his only points of the game after battling foul trouble in the game – tied the score at 76-76 with 2:33 remaining. The Gorillas (1-2) made three of four free throws over the next 90 seconds of action to take a 79-76 lead with 1:00 remaining.

Newman's Daniel Nwosu missed a guarded 3-pointer with 40 seconds to play and Pitt State's Dakota Jones countered with a 3-pointer for an 82-76 lead with 12 ticks left.

Jones led all scorers with 20 points on seven of 11 shooting from the field, including four 3-pointers. Isaiah Hicks added 13 points and eight rebounds while Christian Edmondson posted his first career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. R.J. Pair (11) and Elijah Gaines (10) also scored in double figures for the Gorillas.

Pitt State overcame 20 turnovers in the contest and a 10-point deficit at the free throw line. Newman (0-3) converted 24 of 30 charity shots to offset a tepid 37 percent shooting night (23 of 61). Nwosu led the Jets with 18 points, while taylor Schieber added 12 and Pierre Hayden chipped in with 10.

The Gorillas will return to action Thursday (Nov. 17) when they travel to Liberty, Mo., to face William Jewell College at 7 p.m. (CST).
