Box Score SAN JUAN, P.R. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team set a new program record for fewest points allowed in a game, as it held Puerto Rico Rio Piedras to 25 points in an 86-25 win in the final day of the Puerto Rico Challenge. The 61-point victory was just two-points shy of the school record for largest margin of victory.
The previous record for fewest points allowed was 30 against Mid-America Nazarene on January 8, 1988.
The Gorillas made 14 threes in the game, all of them in the first three quarters. Mikaela Burgess and Meghan Maher combined for 10 of those threes, with Burgess hitting six and Maher, four. Pitt State shot lights out in the first half hitting 52.6 percent (20-38) overall and 55.6 percent (10-18) from long range. The Gorillas were boosted by a 34-point first quarter. Scoring slowed in each of the next quarters, but the defense never allowed more than seven points in any quarter.
Burgess led the Gorillas with 26 points, she is now only 12 points from 1,000 career points. Maher scored 12, all from long range, off the bench. Paige Lungwitz added eight points and Madison Northcutt, seven. Brenlee McPherson was the team's rebounding leader with nine. Hadyn Herlocker added seven rebounds and seven assists.
Pitt State returns to Pittsburg to begin MIAA play on Thursday, December 1 at 5:30 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney.
