Hot Shooting Gorillas Knock Off Tigers, 101-92


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's basketball team shot 57 percent from the field and generatd 36 points at the foul line as the Gorillas posted a 101-92 victory over Fort Hays State University Thursday (Feb. 11) at John Lance Arena.

Trey Starks scored a career-high 28 points on nine of 11 shooting from the field. He made four of Pitt State's 11 3-pointers in the contest. Josiah Gustafson added 22 points and eight rebounds. He has now scored 1,110 points in 82 career games, climbing to 13th on the school's all-time scoring list.

Denton Hays added 12 points for the Gorillas (13-11, 8-10 MIAA), who made 27 of 47 shots from the floor in the game, while Javis Flynn added 10 points, a game-high nine rebounds and six of Pitt State's 19 assists in the contest. Jaxon Holden and Dakota Jones added 10 apiece. Pitt State made 36 of 45 free throws in the contest – 30 of 36 in the second half to help hold off FHSU's comeback bid.

Craig Nicholson posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 assists to pace the Tigers (15-8, 9-8 MIAA), who trailed 46-32 at halftime. Jake Stoppel added 18 points and Rob Davis finished with 16. The Tigers shot 52 percent from the field in the game (33 of 63), but Pitt State outscored FHSU 36-17 at the free throw line.

The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Feb. 13) when they play host to the University of Nebraska-Kearney for Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
