PITTSBURG — Andrew Vogelbaugh belted an 0-2 pitch over the scoreboard in left field for a walkoff home run – his fourth round tripper of the day – lifting the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 9-8 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday (Feb. 20).
The walk off win allowed the Gorillas (4-3) to gain a split of a doubleheader against the Bulldogs (1-2). UMD defeated Pitt State, 18-9, in the opening game of the Saturday twinbill.
Vogelbaugh went 3-for-4 with three home runs and four RBI in the nightcap. He belted a two-run homer in the first to stake Pitt State to a 2-1 lead. He added a solo shot in the third as the Gorillas stretched their lead to 6-1.
The Bulldogs rallied to tie the game at 6-6 with a five-run fourth inning, before Pitt State pushed back in front, 8-6, with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Ryan McKay (1-0) entered the game with an 8-7 lead with two outs in the sixth, seeking his 23rd career save. He got the final out of the sixth, but surrendered a game-tieing home run by UMD's Kyle Comer with one out in the seventh.
Comer's heroics were shortlived, however, as Vogelbaugh took two pitches from UMD reliever Marcus Frederickson before belting the towering game-winning shot.
The Bulldogs overcame a 4-0 first inning deficit in the day's opener, plating four runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to take control. UMD added six more runs in the sixth inning.
Grant Farley went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI. Alex Wojciechowski also homered twice and drove in four runs.
Vogelbaugh had a two-run double and a three-run homer to pace the Gorillas. Jacob Boylan also went 2-for-3 with three runs scored for Pitt State.
The two teams will wrap up a four-game series with a final game at 1 p.m. (CST) Sunday (Feb. 21).
