PITTSBURG -- The Emporia State University baseball team broke open a 4-2 game with a 13-run onslaught in the middle innings en route to a 22-7 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Feb. 27) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Hornets (8-3, 2-0 MIAA) plated five runs in the fourth inning then tacked on eight more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 17-4 lead against the Gorillas (5-5, 0-2 MIAA).
Evan Koehler led ESU's 21-hit attack, goin 3-for-5 with his sixth home run of the season, driving in four runs. Ryan McBroom also went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a home run and three RBI.
Christian Arnold went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and three RBI. Andrew Vogelbaugh also went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
ESU's Matt Slauter (2-0) scattered six hits and four earned runs over five innings of work.
The Gorillas and Hornets will complete their three-game series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday (Feb. 28).
