EDMOND, Okla. – The Pittsburg State softball team moved to 10-5 on the season as it split a midweek, non-conference doubleheader at Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday (March 1) afternoon. The Gorillas won the first game 6-4, but lost the second 5-4 on a walk-off, RBI base hit in the bottom of the seventh.
In game one, Katy Remy and Jenna Bolton each went 2-for-4. Bolton led the team with three RBI. Kylie Guthier went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Sierra Hall and Catie Cummins were also each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Alex Perez and Myka Hayward had the remaining two hits for the Gorillas as they tallied six runs on nine hits and three Oklahoma Christian errors.
The Eagles scored their four runs on six hits and two Pitt State errors.
Emmie Robertson went the distance in the circle for the Gorillas to move her record to 8-1 on the season. She struck out eight and walked six. All four runs she gave up were earned.
All the scoring was done in the fourth and fifth innings. With one out in the fourth, Kylie Guthier hit a solo home run, her fourth of the season. Alex perez reached on ann error by the Eagles firstbaseman. Bolton and Cummins hit back-to-back base hits to score Perez. Kris Van Hoosen reached on the second error of the inning to load the bases. Following the second out of the inning, Sierra Hall slapped a base hit through the left side to score Bolton for the 3-0 lead.
Oklahoma Christian got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on three hits to make the score 3-1.
Nicole Nease and Guthier drew back-to-back walks to lead off the top of the fifth. With one out, Jenna Bolton blasted her first career home run out in left field to make the score 6-1.
Three hits and two walks led to three runs for the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth for the final 6-4 score.
The Gorillas played from behind most of game two. One hit made the difference in the game as the Eagles outhit the Gorillas 9-8. Each team had an error.
Remy, Nease and Ashton Pratt each went 2-for-4 in game two. Remy added a run and an RBI. Alex Perez and Van Hoosen had the remaining two Gorilla hits with Perez adding three RBI.
Morgan Myers took the loss in the circle for Pitt State. She moves to 2-4 on the season. In 6.2 innings, she struck out seven batters and walked five. All five runs were earned.
The Gorillas scored the first run of the game in the top of the third. Van Hoosen started the inning with a base hit and moved to second on an error. Pratt put down a bunt single to move Van Hoosen to third for Remy's RBI base hit to left.
Oklahoma Christian tied the game with a run in their half of the third. The Eagles then tacked on two more runs on a hit and an error in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-1 lead.
Pitt State went up 4-3 in the top of the sixth. Remy and Nease hit back-to-back base hits, forcing a OCU pitching change. Andie Cumbie came in to pinch run for Nease. She and Remy each moved up a base on a wild pitch. Guthier struck out, but reached first on a passed ball to load the bases for Perez. Perez stepped up and ripped a triple to right center to put the Gorillas in the lead.
Two hits and a walk led to an Oklahoma Christian run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 4-4.
The Gorillas had one hit in the top of the seventh, but were not able to break the tie.
The Eagles lead off batter of the seventh walked. She advanced to second on a ground out that was the second out of the inning and to third on a wild pitch. Another batter walked to put runners at first and third and an RBI base hit the center would prove to be the game winner.
The Gorillas begin MIAA play on Friday as they host their 2016 home opener on Friday (March 4) against Missouri Southern in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
