PITTSBURG – The Pitt State softball team scored 19 runs in a sweep of Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday (March 12) afternoon at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas won game one 11-2 and took game two 8-5.
Pitt State was very efficient at the plate in game one, plating 11 runs on 12 hits and one Loper error. All nine of the Pitt State starters either got a hit or scored a run. Sierra Hall and Katy Remy led the team with three-hits each. Remy and Nicole Nease led the team with three RBI.
The Lopers scored two runs on five hits.Â
Nebraska-Kearney was on the board first witha solo home run by Kate Ruwe in the top of the first frame.
The Gorillas easily answered in the bottom of the inning. Pratt reached on an error to start the inning. Sierra Hall showed her speed, beating out the throw on a bunt single. Katy Remy cleared the bases with her double to center to give the Gorillas the 2-1 lead. With one out, Kylie Guthier added a base hit, allowing Remy to advance to third. Remy then scored the third Gorilla run on a passed ball. Jenna Bolton added a two out hit, followed by a base hit by Cummins for a 4-1 lead.Â
Hall started the second inning with a base hit and stole second. Remy knocked a hit to right center for an RBI and legged out the triple. With two outs, Bolton added a two RBI double to score Alex Perez and Kylie Guthier.
Pitt State's final four runs came in the bottom of the third. Jordan Bradshaw drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hall knocked a oone-out double down the left field line to score Bradshaw. Following a Remy base hit, Nicole Nease hit a bomb to left to bring home three more runs, putting the Gorillas up 11-1.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but UNK added a run in the fifth.
Emmie Robertson struck out nine and walked only one in the win for the Gorillas to improve to 11-2 on the season
In game two, Pitt State scored 8 runs on 8 hits and two Loper errors. UNK plated five runs on seven hits and three Pitt State errors. Ashton Pratt, Sierra Hall and Catie Cummins each had two hits. Cummins, Alex Perez and Jenna Bolton each recorded two RBI.
Pitt State scored quick right out of the gates. Pratt singled up the middle, stole second and moved to third on a Hall sacrifice. Remy and Guthier walked to load the bases. Perez drove a double to left to bring home Pratt and Remy. Bolton followed with a two RBI base hit for an early 4-0 lead.Â
The Gorillas scored again in the third, this time on a bases loaded walk to Pratt and a Hall base hit to score Cummins.Â
UNK got on the board in the top of the fourth with a two RBI home run by Kayla Carter.
The Lopers made the score 6-3 as a run scored on a Pitt State error.
Pitt State scored its last two runs in the sixth as Andie Cumbie and Perez scored on a Cummins double to left, making the score 8-3.
The final scores came in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly and a home run.
Morgan Myers earned the win to improve to 6-4 on the season. She struck out four and only three of the five runs she gave up were earned.Â
Pitt State will practice this week before meeting up with some tough regional competition at the Missouri Western Apple Market Classic in Sy. Joseph, Mo. on March 18-20.
