PITTSBURG -- The Missouri Southern State University baseball team scored three runs in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 10-9 victory over Pittsburg State University Wednesday (Apr. 13) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (9-25, 4-21 MIAA) built a 7-1 lead on the Lions (25-11, 15-10 MIAA) after three innings of play, but Pitt State could not hold off MSSU in the late innings.
Jack Mercer belted a three-run home run in the contest for the Gorillas, while Andrew Vogelbaugh went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run in the bottom of the eighth that trimmed MSSU's lead to 10-8, but the Lions Payton Walker got an inning-ending double play to escape without further damage.
The Gorillas now will travel to Kearney, Neb., overnight to face the University of Nebraska-Kearney in game one of a three game series Thursday (Apr. 14) at 7:30 p.m.
