PITTSBURG -- Gage Grant delivered a one-out bases loaded single to lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Fort Hays State University Thursday (Apr. 28) in the opening game of a three-game MIAA series.
The Gorillas (14-29, 9-25 MIAA) loaded the bases against FHSU reliever Giles Fox (2-1) thanks to consecutive singles by Cole Brecheisen and Andrew Vogelbaugh, a fielder's choice by Jacob Boylan and an intentional walk to Christian Arnold. Grant, 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and two strikeouts to that point, then lined a shot into right field to score Brecheisen with the winning run.
Nick Brandecker (4-4) got the final five outs to win for the second time in as many days after earning the win in a 5-4 victory over Missouri Southern Wednesday. Cooper Gardner worked into the eighth inning, allowing just four hits and two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings of work.
Vogelbaugh went 3-for-4 in the contest, while Arnold doubled and hit a solo home run that tied the score 2-2 in the sixth inning.
Caleb Cherryholmes hit a solo home run for the Tigers (19-26, 13-21 MIAA).
Pitt State and FHSU now will face one another at Noon Friday (Apr. 29) and close out the series with a final game at Noon Saturday (Apr. 30).
