PITTSBURG — Chase Kilgore delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Pittsburg State University baseball team rally for a 10-8 victory over Lincoln University Friday (Apr. 8) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas plated three runs in the eighth inning to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 10-8 lead.
Christian Arnold started the rally with a one-out single, before Chase Cleland drew a walk. Pinch hitter Jack Mercer hit a comebacker to Blue Tigers pitcher Kolton Clark, who tried to force Arnold at third base but LU's Zach Anderson couldn't hold the throw allowing Arnold to reach base.
Kilgore followed with his two-run single and he advanced to second base when right fielder Daniel Castillo mis-handled the ball. Cooper Karlin added a bunt single to plate Mercer with an insurance run.
Nick Brandecker (2-2) worked the final three innings on the mound to earn the victory.
Pitt State (7-24, 2-20 MIAA) took an early 6-1 lead in the contest thanks to a five-run second inning. Cole Brecheisen, who doubled and scored in the first inning, belted a grandslam home run in the second inning. He finished the game going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI. Brecheisen was thrown out at third base in the seventh inning. He was bidding to hit for the cycle in the game on the play.
Lincoln (1-31, 0-22 MIAA) used a six-run fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead.
The two team will resume their three-game MIAA series with a 3 p.m. game Saturday.
