SEARCY, Ark. — Emporia State University's Kelly Moten scored 10 of the game's final 12 points as the Lady Hornets pulled away for a 65-57 victory over the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Saturday (Mar. 11).
The Lady Hornets (29-4) advance to the regional final – Sweet 16 – Monday (Mar. 13). The Gorillas end their season with a 25-6 overall record.
Pitt State and ESU battled to a 55-55 tie before the Lady Hornets closed out the game on a 10-2 run over the final 3:40 of the game. Moten, who had been limited to five points over the first 36 minutes of action, put ESU in front 57-55 with a jumper at the 3:40 mark. After a Pitt State miss, she was fouled and made two free throws for a 59-55 lead with 3:14 to go.
Pitt State's Paige Lungwitz countered with a layup to close within two points, 59-57, with 2:59 remaining, but Moten countered with a layup a minute later to stretch the margin back to four. Moten then made four free throws in the game's final 90 seconds to secure the victory. The Gorillas made just one of five shots from the floor in the final 3:40.
Kathryn Flott scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets. Moten chipped in with 15 points.
Lungwitz paced the Gorillas with 15 points, while Brenlee McPherson came off the bench to score 14.
